While origami for most is just a form of art, many of the principles behind it have found applications in the world of mechanical design as well, and are common field of study for researchers.
My research work with origami-inspired mechanisms includes the development of a design paradigm to produce rigid-body, one-piece linkages out of carbon fiber for aerodynamic applications, and attempting at producing a freedom-and-constraint theory for mechanisms that are reproducible from folds alone.
